NEW REPORT JUST RELEASED: The Health Risks and Consequences of
Trafficking in Women and Adolescents. Findings from a European Study.

A report detailing the findings of a two-year multi-country study on the
health risks and consequences identified among women and adolescents who
have been trafficked to the European Union has just been released and
can be found in electronic format at
http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/hpu/new_papers.htm.

This qualitative study was carried out by a team of university and NGO
researchers, led by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine,
with support from the European Commission's Daphne Programme. The study
represents one of the first comprehensive examinations into the area of
health and trafficking. The findings are based on interviews conducted
with trafficked women, service providers, law enforcement officials, and
policy-makers in Ukraine, Italy, Albania, the Netherlands, United
Kingdom, and Thailand. The report offers a set of conceptual frameworks
for understanding various aspects of health and trafficking in women,
details findings on a broad range of physical, psychological, social,
economic, legal, occupational and environmental risks experienced by
trafficked women and the corresponding health consequences, and
describes issues related to service provision. In addition, the report
provides a human rights analysis of health and trafficking, and a set of
"Principles for Promoting the Health Rights of Trafficked Women." It
also suggests recommendations for action to improve health policies and
services for trafficked women.

Research partners included London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine,
Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women (Thailand), La Strada
Ukraine, University of Padua, Department of Sociology (Italy), Child and
Woman Abuse Studies Unit (London Metropolitan University), STV
Foundation Against Trafficking in Women (Netherlands), International
Catholic Migration Committee (Albania). The report citation is:
